Somatic symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bowel irregularities, and urinary issues affect millions worldwide. These conditions often resist conventional treatments, leaving many searching for alternative approaches. My name is Tony from enhancedhypnotherapy.co.uk I see people with these related issues on a daily basis, often clients would have tried everything else before coming in. Hypnosis offers a promising path by addressing the mind-body connection, calming the nervous system, and shifting brain activity. This post explores how hypnosis can ease somatic symptoms, highlighting the roles of the Vagus nerve, the sympathetic nervous system, and brain hemispheres. We also consider insights from neuroscience and mindfulness, drawing on a slightly Buddhist perspective to deepen understanding.

What is interesting is that nearly every client is running the same type of programmes. The idea that somehow there is something wrong with them, that maybe they have a particular label, such as IBS, or Toilet Anxiety for instance. However what we are experiencing is our unconscious and to a large extent conscious beliefs, that lock us in to a kind of toxic trance. The trance seems all prevailing as if its just happening to us. Unfortunately we are the creator, we are also the experiencer of these defence programmes.

The Paper Clip Problem in AI.

Please bear with me and read on. This Paper Clip issue, is called the Alignment problem and vexes many a mind of the developers of LLMs (Large Language Models) which are the fundamental programmes and structures of AI. The basis of the problem is this, that if you assign an AI to a task, it could take your programming too literally and just make Paper Clips at the determent of everything else, not ideal. However this is similar to how our unconscious programmes of defence work, they are not always aligned with our lives and wishes, but have formed beliefs of reactive defences that may make very little logical sense. That is where here at #enhancedhypnotherapy I hope to create change at that deep level to transform peoples experience of life. Remember you cannot just think your way out of these states, it doesn't work like that.

Understanding Somatic Symptoms and Their Nervous System Roots

Somatic symptoms such as IBS and urinary issues often involve complex interactions between the brain and body. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a key role here, with two main branches:

  • Sympathetic nervous system (SNS): Activates the "fight or flight" response, increasing stress hormones, heart rate, and muscle tension. Overactivity can worsen symptoms like bowel spasms or urinary urgency.

  • Vagus nerve (part of the parasympathetic system): Promotes relaxation, digestion, and healing. Stimulating the Vagus nerve helps calm inflammation and restore balance.

When the SNS dominates, the body remains in a heightened state of alert, which can trigger or worsen symptoms. The very act unfortunately of trying to think our way out of the problem, inadvertently fires up the reactive defence mechanisms. Hypnosis helps by activating the vagus nerve and reducing sympathetic overdrive, promoting a state of calm and healing.

How Hypnosis Works to Alleviate Somatic Symptoms

Hypnosis guides the mind into a focused, relaxed state where the subconscious becomes more open to positive suggestions. This state can:

  • Reduce anxiety and stress, which often exacerbate somatic symptoms.

  • Shift brain activity from the left hemisphere, associated with analytical thinking and worry, to the right hemisphere, linked to peripheral awareness and emotional regulation.

  • Enhance vagal tone, improving digestion and urinary function.

  • Interrupt negative feedback loops between the brain and body that maintain symptoms.

Research shows hypnosis can significantly reduce IBS symptoms. For example, a study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that 70% of patients experienced symptom relief after hypnotherapy sessions. Another survey reported that 60-80% of individuals with bowel or urinary issues noticed improvements following hypnosis.

The Brain Hemispheres and Anxiety in Somatic Symptoms

The left brain hemisphere tends to dominate in anxiety, focusing on details, language, and logical analysis. This dominance can trap individuals in cycles of worry about their symptoms, increasing stress and physical tension.

The right hemisphere, by contrast, processes holistic, sensory, and emotional information. It supports peripheral awareness—being present in the body and environment without judgment. Hypnosis encourages a shift toward right-brain activity, helping clients reconnect with bodily sensations in a calm, mindful way.

This shift aligns with Buddhist mindfulness practices, letting go of the "WHAT IFS" being free to face life without assumptions. To feel grounded, which emphasize non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. By fostering this connection, hypnosis helps break the cycle of anxiety and physical distress.

Mindfulness, Buddhism, and Hypnosis: A Complementary Approach

Buddhist teachings encourage observing sensations and thoughts without attachment or aversion. This approach reduces mental reactivity and calms the nervous system. Hypnosis can deepen this mindful state by:

  • Helping clients enter relaxed, focused states more easily.

  • Allowing exploration of bodily sensations without fear or judgment.

  • Supporting the development of compassion toward oneself and one’s symptoms.

Together, hypnosis and mindfulness create a powerful toolset for managing somatic symptoms. Clients learn to observe discomfort with curiosity rather than resistance, reducing the stress response and promoting healing.

Practical Examples from Enhanced Hypnotherapy

At Enhanced Hypnotherapy, I have seen many clients with IBS and urinary issues benefit from hypnosis combined with Hypnotherapy and mindfulness based techniques. For example:

  • Clients with chronic IBS reported often report real reductions in flare-ups after six hypnosis sessions focusing on vagal nerve activation and right-brain awareness.

  • Another client with urinary urgency learned to calm sympathetic overactivity through guided hypnosis and mindfulness sessions, leading to a complete change in their lives.

These cases illustrate how hypnosis can complement medical treatments and lifestyle changes, offering a holistic path to symptom relief.

Summary of Research and Effectiveness

  • IBS symptom relief: 60-80% of patients report improvement after hypnotherapy (American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2014).

  • Vagal tone increase: Studies show hypnosis can enhance parasympathetic activity, improving digestion and urinary function.

  • Brain activity shift: Neuroimaging reveals hypnosis reduces left-brain dominance linked to anxiety, increasing right-brain engagement.

  • Mindfulness synergy: Combining hypnosis with mindfulness practices enhances emotional regulation and body awareness.

These findings support hypnosis as a valuable tool for managing somatic symptoms, especially when anxiety and nervous system imbalance play a role.
